When they arrived Devanté felt jitters when he saw how many teens were standing outside waiting to go in. He followed Mr. Randall as he went to greet the other teachers. As far as Devanté could see nobody was really noticeably nervous. Majority of the teenagers from his school was chalking today up as a day out of school.
“How are you all doing? I’m Mr. Randall from Heritage High,” he introduced himself.
The teachers present introduced themselves individually. Devanté realized that not even half of the participants were even present. As the guard unlocked the doors the teachers instructed the students to remain calm and enter the doors one at a time.
Once Devanté got into the mall he saw there was a table for every school. There he saw how many schools that were participating. He was awe struck to say the least. He didn’t know Tabb, Yorktown, Jamestown, Lafayette would even be here. Finally he saw Heritage’s table he went to the lady behind the table and told her his name.
“That’s what talking about. Fluctuate that voice, give that firm handshake look people in their eyes you are going to do good Devanté,” she said as she got his name tag and his number.
Devanté thought ‘she is a little too hype this morning’. He looked around at all the closed stores and wondered how the owners were feeling about them being there. He wondered if they had to remain close today, yet he knew the food vendors were not going to be closed. That was just simple marketing.
After everyone got settled in the food court, the coordinator took the microphone. She was a medium sized white lady with glasses. “Hello everyone my name is Mrs. Tyson,” she took a long pause because there were teenagers still talking. “Teachers please mind your students. I would hate for you to have brought them just far, to just be disqualified.”
Teachers from all angles stood and looked around for any of there students. It was similar to a warden giving a warning to inmates and the guards had to make sure it was clear. The students avoided their teacher’s eyes and closed their mouths then turn their attention to Mrs. Tyson.
“The most important thing you should have is your number. Who doesn’t have a number” Mrs. Tyson asked. No one raised their hands so she continued, “I need all the teachers to stand. Young professionals when if your number is from 1 to 25 please follow Mr. Randall.” Mr. Randall raised his hand, so they knew who he was.
Mrs. Tyson went on to direct all the teenagers to go to different areas for testing. They were numbered by what they were testing in certain groups had to do more than just a test. As far as Devanté’s group it was only a test to be taken, no interview had to be conducted. That was the good part, the bad part his test was three hours long.
Lynette was also nervous. She was glad she was among the group with Mr. Randall. When she saw he was about to leave them she asked as he passed, “Are you leaving Mr. Randall?”
“Yes I have to, don’t worry you did good on the midterms you’ll do good on this. Come see me before your interview I can give you a pep talk,” he replied with a smile.
An instructor came by and handed her a test. Lynette felt like she could have done more studying, but she was spending more time talking to Precise. She was a little upset with herself that she wouldn’t be able to complete this timed test with precision.
