Chapter Lost && Found

A woman weeps as she drives in the rain, her eyes are focused on the road, but her mind is
somewhere else. She placed her foot on the brakes once she reached her destination than she sighed and wiped her eyes dry. Her passenger door opens, and a young attractive man enters her vehicle. “Hey baby,” the man’s masculine voice sang. She responded with a smile then asked him, “How was your day at work?” The man leaned his seat back then flashed his million dollar smile and replied, “Just another day being a slave for the man.”

The young woman smiled, but she would have normally laughed at such a comment from her lover. The man sensed something wrong immediately, but before he could address his worry she spoke. “ Gary, I’m pregnant,” she stated. Instantly she felt relieved after the outburst, but then she felt his set of disapproving eyes. Gary sighed; staring at the dashboard he asked knowing she was only intimate with him, “You sure it’s mine?” The young blue eyed woman looked at him as if he were an alien; no longer crying she asked him, “Do you have to ask me that?”

Realizing his statement was foul Gary adjusted himself in his seat then he began scratching his head and
debating what he should say next. He finally decided, “Do you plan on keepin’ it, Helen?” Gary knew the answer to that question before he asked it because Helen had been told him that she didn’t believe in abortion. She answered his idiotic question with a stare so hard it looked like she was using x-ray vision. Gary suddenly became tense, feeling trapped by the news Gary began to babble, “You know I got work and school, I mean man a baby would mess everything up. Why would you get pregnant? You know I can’t handle this; can’t believe you got knocked up!”

Helen became aggravated at the fact that Gary was trying to imply that she had intentionally got pregnant
to corner him. “Well I’m keeping’ the baby anyway you don’t have to stay wit us,” she said preparing to disregard Gary’s response. Gary quickly responded by flipping the issue, “Well if you feel that way guess I’ll leave you two alone.” Before the statement could register in Helen’s mind Gary was out of the car headed up the street. Helen’s throat grew as tight as a military knot and tears welded in her eyes than race down her cheeks. She looked at Gary’s back and took a mental picture than noted it as the last time she would see her baby’s father. The world now looks grimmer for the eighteen year old young woman, who’s now pregnant with no job and no support other than the support provided by her parents, whom have yet heard the mouth dropping news.

The year is 1977 the location is a place called Williamsburg, Virginia. A major tour site due to Jamestown
which lies in Colonial Williamsburg, remember the story of John Smith and Pocahontas. One truth in the story is that many Indians at one point lived on these many plains before they were named. Helen’s grandfather who is Cherokee is one of few Indians who don’t live on a reservation but still own land. He works hard as a farmer and runs his own garbage company which makes close to nothing since majority of his neighbors burn their trash. His big build and long white hair is known all over Williamsburg; he is a well respected individual.

Helen’s mother was a dark skinned woman with eyes that would remind you of the sight of a picture perfect
ocean. She was a housekeeper for exquisite white families residing in the Colonial Williamsburg area. For the past decade she had been working for the same family. Even though both Helen's parents worked hard they still fought to pay the bills; neither one of her parents were ready for grandchildren.
